Feaster Charter School Future Innovators Summer Camp 2023: An Enriching STEAM Event!

The Future Innovators Summer Camp was a full-day program that immersed students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) learning. The camp was open to students ages 8-14, and it ran for four weeks in June and July.

The camp was divided into three parts: academic enrichment, STEM activities, and field trips. The academic enrichment portion of the camp focused on reading and math. Students worked on their reading comprehension and vocabulary skills, and they learned about different math concepts, such as fractions, decimals, and geometry.

Students learned how to code virtual robots using CoderZ, and they used Codey Rocky robotics kits to plan a mission to Mars. They also learned about simple machines and how they work.

On Fridays, the camp took field trips to STEM-related locations. Many visited the USS Midway Museum, the Fleet Science Center, and the San Diego Air & Space Museum. They also had an industry day with Porpoise Robotics.

In addition to the STEM activities, the camp also focused on unique attributes found in the communities where it was held. For instance, the Feaster Future Innovators walked to the Chula Vista Police Department to learn about drone use in public safety and first responders. This was especially helpful as Hurricane Hilary came to town and drones and other technologies were used to monitor for community safety.

They also received certificates of award from UCSD Division of Extended Studies and earned college credit. This was a great opportunity for students to see themselves outside of their communities and to learn about the possibilities that are available to them.

The camp was funded by a two year Extended Learning Grant through the San Diego Foundation. The camp also partnered with the Feaster Charter School  and the Classroom of the Future Foundations (CFF).

The Future Innovators Summer Camp was a great opportunity for students to learn about STEAM and to explore their communities. The camp was well-organized and the staff were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The summer ended with Feaster Charter School teachers Stephan Phan and Yareli Parga  joining EDforTech staffers Todd Ullah and Danielle Bush  on the Spotlight in Community podcast Cloudcast Media & DS Studios sponsored by Mission Federal Credit Union to address summer learning and engagement. Both organizations are excited to do it all over again in Summer of 2024!
